ABSTRACT:

Expressions for the chemical shifts in terms of the Fermi energy and the critical wave vectors have been derived. A fair agreement between the calculated and the observed results have been found. Various plasmon losses found in the a ray absorption spectra have also been explained. The effect of the geometry of the specimen has also been taken into account, which explains the different surface losses for the same specimen. For calculating the ptasmon energy of metals, an expression for the total number of electrons participating in the plasmon oscillaticrs has been obtained. From the range of the critical wave vectors used, one can infer the range of the chemical shift. Finally an interesting method is being given to calculate the Fermi energy of desired compound in terms of the chemical shift.
