Spectrophotometry Determination of Nitrate in Water by Reduction to Ammonia With Titanium (III) Chloride

ABSTRACT:

A procedure for nitrate reduction to ammonia using titanium (III) chloride is described. The produced ammonia is distilled from strongly alkaline medium into boric acid solution followed by indophenol anion formation whose absorbance is measured at 625 nm. The various parameters affecting both the reduction or the blue indophenol formation are evaluated. The method is suitable for the determination of nitrate-nitrogen over the range 0-70 μg in a 10-mn cell. The calcu¬lated limit of detection is 6.7 x 10-3 μgN mi"1 and the relative standard deviations for 0 .1 and 0.5 μg N ml-1 (five analysts) are 1.71% and 2%, respectively. The method is free from most interferences and has been applied to drinking water samples and the results obtained compare well with those obtained by the standard copperized cadmium method.
