Possible Involvement of Chromium in the Mechanism of Action of Metformin

ABSTRACT:

The effect of metformin or glibenclamide on serum levels of glucose, insulin and chromium in rats was investigated. Results indicated that metformin ( 500 mg/kg orally ) induced marked decreased in serum glucose level associated with a significant reduction in serum chromium level, without affecting serum insulin level. Meanwhile hypoglycemic effect of glibenclamide (5 mg/kg orally) was associated with a significant elevation in serum insulin level but there is no any sitnift-cant changes in serum chromium level. In conclusion, the results direct the attention to the possible involvement of chromium in the mechanism of action of metformin in the treatment of diabetic patients while chromium has no role in the action of glibenclamide.
