ABSTRACT:

The anodic oxidation of various sugar* viz glucose, galactose, maltose and lactose in a sodium bromide solution has been carried out at graphite anode in an undivided cell in presence of carbonate of metal like Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn. In all cases, good yield ( 90°/ ) of metal salt of the acid was obtained. Polarization study were also made and a plausible mechanism of the oxidation of sugars has been proposed.
