Labelling of Olive Oil and Oleic Acid by Iodine Monochloride

ABSTRACT:

Olive Oil (O.O) and Oleic acid (O.A) were labelled by 125ICI using diethyl ether (DEE), petroleum ether (PB), petroleum ether (PE), n-heptane (n HE) and benzene (BEN) as solvents. The maximum yields were attained at different times when they become constant or before they decrease a little. The kinetics of formation and decay of labelled compounds were found to be second order with rate constants being dependent on solvent. Except for BEN, a good inverse relationship was found between yield and boiling points which reflects the instability of C-I bonds. In addition, the yield was found to depend on the method of ICI preparation which may indicate the participation of other species in the reaction. The yield of labelled 0.0 was proportional to its content of unsaturated acids.
