ABSTRACT:

The Tin Group cations (tin, antimony and arsenic) have been quantitatively precipitated as sulphides through decomposition of thiocyanatc in sulphuric acid media. The method is more accurate and reliable and found to be more favourable when the results were compared with the thioacetamide method. Quantitative determinations were dependent on acid, thiocyanate and time of heating. Solutions containing H2S04 in the range 1.5-3.0M and thiocyanate in the range 0.1-0.3 M were adequate for precise determination of tin. Sulphuric acid in the range 1.9 to 3.6M and thiocyanate in the range 0.16 to 0.3M were appropriate for precise determination of antimony. While sulphuric acid in the range 1.8-3.8M and thiocyanate in the range 0.1-0.3M were found to be adequate for precise determination of arsenic Heating the reactants for at least 20 minutes on a water bath maintained at 100±5°C was necessary for complete precipitation of the three elements.
