ABSTRACT:

N-alkyl phthalyl benzimidazoles (IV) were synthesized by treating o-phenylene diamine with N-phthalyl substituted amino acids (III). These were subjected to Mannich reaction using formaldehyde and ammonium chloride giving the Mannich base i.e. N-alkyl phthayl-1-amino methyl benzimidazoles (V). Reaction with appropriate aromatic aldehydes under anhydrous conditions yielded the Schiff bases (VI). Subsequent cyclisation with thioglycollic acid in 1,4-dioxane gave the title compounds. These compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity in vitro. Some of the thiazolidinones were found to be active.
