ABSTRACT:

The ligands 4-hydroxy-1-phenyl quinolin 2(1H) -one- semicarbazone (HPQS=HL1) and 4-hydroxy-1-phenyl quinolin-2-(1H)-one- thiosemicarbazone (HPQTS=HL2) have been synthesised by the condensation between 4-hydroxy-1-phenyl (qulnolin-2-(1H) one and semicarbazide hydrochloride/thiosemicarbazide hydrochloride. A series of complexes having general formula [M(HPQS)2] and [M(HPQTS)2] M = Co(ll), Ni(ll) and Cu(ll) were prepared. The ligands as well as metal complexes have been characterised by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance, infrared spectra and electronic spectra. On the basis of above observations, it has been observed that the ligands HPQS and HPQTS were co-ordinates to the metal ion as a neutral tridentate manner through the nitrogen and oxygen/sulphur atoms. Electronic spectra and magnetic moment data of the metal complexes reveal a octahedral geometry around the metal ion. The complexes were found to be non electrolytic on the basis of low value of molar conductance.
