ABSTRACT:

Metal chelates of Co(Il), Ni(ll) and Cu(II) having general composition [M(HL)2X2] where HL = 4-hydroxy-phenylquinolin-2-(1H)-one-hydrazone (HPQH) and X = NH3, pyridine, a, b or g-picolines are reported. The characterisation of the ligand as well as metal complexes have been made on the basis of elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, infrared spectra, electronic spectra and molar conductance. On the basis of the above observations, the ligand, HPQH has been found to act in a bidentate manner co-ordinating to the metal ion through the nitrogen and oxygen atom of the ligand. The remaining co-ordination sites are occupied by neutral molecules like ammonia, pyridine, a, b or g-picoline. The geometry of the complexes are proposed to be octahedral in nature on the basis of magnetic susceptibility and electronic spectra of the metal complexes. The complexes were found to be non electrolytic in nature on the basis of low value of molar conductance.
