ABSTRACT:

A novel series of twelve coordination compounds of thorium(IV) with 4[N-(4'-nitrobenzalidene) amino] antipyrine semicarbazone (4'-NO2BAAPS) and 4[N-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzalidene) amino] antipyrine semicarbazone (TMBAAPS) with the general composition ThX4.2L (X=Cl-, Br-, I-, NCS- or ClO4-; L = 4'-NO2BAAPS or TMBAAPS) and Th(NO3)4.L have been synthesized in non-aqueous media and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, electrical conductivity, molecular weight and infrared spectral studies. In all the coordination compounds, these ligands act as neutral tridentate (N,N,O) compounds. The probable coordination of Th(IV) varies from 6, 8, 10 and 11 depending on the nature of anionic ligands. Thermal properties of these compounds were also discussed.
