ABSTRACT:

The reactions of di(p-anisyl) telluroxides, DATO and di(p-hydroxyphenyl) telluroxide, DHPTO which act as lewis bases, with some metal chlorides behaving as lewis acids have been studied. Stronger lewis acids such as titanium (IV), tin (IV), antimony (III) and antimony (V) chlorides, chlorinate the telluroxides to give diaryltellurium (IV) dichlorides. Relatively weaker lewis acids such as iron (III), copper (II), cadmium (II) and mercury (II) chlorides form 2R2TeO. MCIn type complexes with DATO. Di(p-hydroxyphenyl) telluroxide yields such complexes only with iron (III) and copper (II) chlorides. No reaction, however, is observed with zinc(ll) chloride which is a very weak lewis acid. Conductance and cryoscopic measurements reflect the non-ionic and monomeric natures of these complexes in nitrobenzene. A shift in Te=O band towards lower frequency indicates the linkage of telluroxide to the metal through the oxygen atom.
