ABSTRACT:

Nanocomposites of Mg/AI- and Zn/AI- layered double hydroxide-(anthraquinones-2,6-disuifonate) were synthesised by supontaneous direct assembly of inorganic and organic phases from aqueous solution and was found to be M(ll) and the concentration of intercalant-dependent. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the formation of the nanocomposites afford good crystallinity if the concentration of the anthraquinones-2,6-disulfonate ksn (AQ26) used in the synthesis of the nanocomposites was in the range of (0.1 -1.0) M, for M(ll) =Mg. On the other hand, for M(ll)=Zn, slightly higher concentration range of AQ26 was required, i.e. (0.25-1.0) M. The best crystallinity of the resulting nanocomposfte was obtained when 0.25M AQ26 was used for the synthesis for Mg system compared to 1.0M AQ26 for the Zn system, with the latter shows the best among them. Noticed also that ZnO phase was observed for Zn system if the concentration of AQ26 used was in the range of (0.0-0.5) M. The co-existence of layered double hydroxide phase with nitrate inter layer anion was observed in Zn system for (0.1-0.25) M compared to 0.1M AQ26 only, in Mg system. FTIR study showed that total exclusion of nitrate species in the resulting nanocomposites can be achieved if >0.25M AQ26 was used in Mg system compared to 0.5M AQ26 in the Zn system.
