ABSTRACT:

Some new chromophoric chain β-substituted butadienyl (CCSB) asycyanine colorants containing benzothiazole nucleus are synthesized by catalytic condensation of 2-methyl-3-(1-methylethyl)benzothiazolium iodides with 4-dimethylamino styryl phenyl ketones in ethanolic DMF medium. The colorants are synthesized with the object to assess the effects of β-phenyl substituents in the conjugated chain of the colorant molecules. The substitution at p-4'-phenyl nucleus whether electron donor or acceptor lead to red shifts (RS) in absorption maxima when compared to chain p-phenyl unsubstituted series or styryl chain analogues but show blue shifts (BS) when collated with meftho salts of the same series. The purified samples are subjected to in vitro microbiological screening to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of the colorants in comparison to a broad spectrum antibiotic and found to be active against some of them.
