Modified GC-MS for Determination of 1,4-Dioxane in Cosmetic Products

ABSTRACT:

In this paper we report on tie determination of the concentration of 1.4-dioxane in a locally available cosmetic product 1,4- Dioxane, a by-product of partial polymerization of ethylene oxide, is a carcinogenic compound and hence its level of concentration in chemical products must be carettrtly monitored. This work was carried out on a redesigned and modified gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS).These modifications consisted of the installation of a modern controlling and data processing system as well as a programmable temperature vaporizer (PTV) unit The polyoxyethylene solution was directly injected through tie PTV inlet, without any pretreatment. The maximum GC flow rate we could achieved, to reduce experimental time, was 6ml/min. A value of 37 mg/l with Sc=0.004 mmol/l and r = 0.9904 was obtained.
