ABSTRACT:

Phenyl styryl chalcone and Phenyl anisyl chalcone were prepared by condensing acetophenone with benzaldehyde and anisaldehyde respectively in ethanol in presence of alkali. These two chalcones were reacted with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, hydrazine hydrate, thiourea and semicarbazide hydrochloride in presence of alkali to get corresponding isoxazolines, py razolines, thiazines and carboxamide py razolines respectively. Their structures were confirmed on the basis of chemical and spectral analysis. Further, these compounds were subjected to antimicrobial test against the test organisms, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The compounds synthesised from phenylstyryl chalcone seemed to possess greater antimicrobial activity than those obtained from phenylanisyl chalcone.
