ABSTRACT:

The low molecular weight polyketones were prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction from p-methylanisole, ChloroacetyIchloride (CAC)and α,w-dichloroalkanes i.e. dichloromethane (DCM) and 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE)using anhydrous aluminium chloride as catalyst and carbon-disulphide as a solvent. The polyketones thus obtained were characterised by % chlorine content, IR spectroscopy and number average molecular weight (Mn) by Vapour Pressure Osmometry (VPO). The thermal properties were evaluated by Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calonmetry (DSC). All these resins were tested for their biological activity against bacteria, fungi and yeast. The results indicates that the growth of the tested organisms was inhibited by the polyketones to the considerable extents.
