ABSTRACT:

The values of free volumes of some liquid alkanes ( propane, butane, cyclohexane) have been evaluated at different temperatures. For this purpose, the values of the ratio of the incompressible volume (Vo) to the volume of the liquid per molecule (V) i.e (Vo/V)1/3 have also been calculated using ultrasonic data. Effect of temperture on the values of (Vo/V)1/3 and free volume, Vf have been studied. Effect of pressure on the value of (Vo/V)1/3 & Vf, which have been perhaps, not been studied so far, has also been studied by taking example of methane. Variation of (Vo/V)1/3 , Vf have been discussed in the light of crowding of atoms & steric hindrance, present in the system.
