ABSTRACT:

The complexing properties of some carboxy and (H)-azo-(3-diketones with some Ianthanide ions were studied potentiometrically. It was found that the complex formation process between the ortho carboxy compound and Ianthanide ions takes place in two steps. At lower pH's the first step involves the formation of chelates using the nitrogen of the azo-group and the oxygen of the carboxy group. The second occurs at higher pH's where the Ianthanide ion interacts with the acetylacetonate moiety and forms another type of complex using the two oxygen atoms. This conclusion was based on tracing the change of the formation function with the degree of neutralization of the ligand and the log K-pK relationships.
