ABSTRACT:

Some new formazans (IIa-j) have been prepared by the coupling reaction of diazotised solution of substituted sulpha drugs with phenyl and 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazones of 4-Dimethylamino benzaldehyde in pyridine. Formazans on further reacting with H2O2/Fe++ underwent cyclisation of give the corresponding tetrazolium bromides (IIIa-e) in presence of excess of sodium bromide. The compounds were tested for in-vitro and in-vivo antiviral activity against Tobacco Mosaic Virus with Datura stramonium L. as the host. The formazans were found to be more active than the tetrazolium bromides. Greater inhibition against the virus was observed in in-vitro than in in-vivo.
