ABSTRACT:

Corrosion of mild steel in sea water, synthetic sea water and heavy ion synthetic sea water has been studied by weight loss method. Corrosion mechanism involved was studied by electrochemical methods. Corrosion inhibition was studied for periods from 1 to 30 days in presence of 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.5% gelatin. It was observed that the rate of corrosion decreases and percentage inhibition increases with increase in concentration of gelatin. In long duration test (30 days), at higher concentration of gelatin (0.5%), percentage inhibition decreases. The rate of corrosion and percentage inhibition observed for heavy ion synthetic sea water was highest followed by synthetic sea water and natural sea water. Electrochemical methods suggest that the inhibitor, gelatin influences both the cathodic and the anodic process and acts as mixed type of inhibitor.
