ABSTRACT:

A method for the determination of trace amounts of sulfide based on the reaction of sulfide with methyl violet at pH 8 and 30°C is described. Se(IV) catalyses the reaction effectively. The decrease in absorbance of methyl violet at 590 nm over a fixed time is proportional to the concentration of sulfide over the range of 0.15-1.85 μg/mL. The limit of detection was found to be 0.083 μg/mL. The relative standard deviation for the determination of 0.80 μg/mL of sulfide is 1.2% (n=l 0)! The interferences of various ions were studied. The method was applied to the determination of sulfide in taping water.
