Duff Reaction on Phenols : Characterization of Non Steam Volatile Products

ABSTRACT:

New products having structures 1 and 2 having characterised in the Dulf reaction on thymol and carvacrol. These products have been identified as 2,6'-dithymyl methane 1 and 5, 5'-diarvacryl methane 2 respectively on the basis of spectral data and the identity confirmed by their synthesis. Strubell's crystalline compound has been identified as 2,6'-dithymyl methane and not 2, hydroxy methyl-3-methyl6-isopropyl phenol as reportef earlier.
