ABSTRACT:

2-Hydroxy, 4-n-butoxy acetophenone (HBA) has been used for (the spectrophotometry determination of Fe(III) at pH 2.95 in water methanol (52-48%) medium. Jobs method of continuous variation, Yoe and Jones mole ratio method, the slope ratio method and logarithmic method of Bent and French show the metal: ligand ratio in the complex to be 1:1. The stability constant of the complex is found to be 1.366 x 103. The purple coloured complex obeys Beer's law in the concentration range 5.6-55.8 ppm of Fe(III) ion, while the optimum concentration range from Ringbom plot is found to be 5,6-33.5 ppm. The photometric sensitivity and molar absorptivity at 510 nm are found to be 0.046ug/cm2 and 1210 1 mol-1 cm-1 respectively. The standard free energy of formation of complex is -4.375 kcal/ mole at 30 °C. The complex is stable for 24h and up to 40o0. The reagent has also been found to give quite satisfactory results for Iron present in pharmaceutical products.
