Abstract:
The effect of nuclear reactor radation doses up to 142 megarad on a dewaxed lubricating base oil was studied through following induced changes in refractive index, density, viscosity, average molecular weight, carbon residue and sulphur contend, as well as compositional changes via ultraviolet, visible, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The nuclear magnetic spectra were used to follow changes in the paraffinic portion of the oil whereas the other spectroscopic investigations were almost concerned with changes in the aromatic and unsaturated systems. Changes in the properties of the oil were also correlated with compositional changes.
