Abstract:

In the kinetic study of oxidation of lactic acid (LA) and mandelic acid (MA) by nickel (III) km, a rapid revercible formation of a complex between the oxidant and reductant which later decomposes in a slow step by an inner sphere electron transfer process is observed. The detection of acetal-dehyde, beozaldehyde and carbon dioxide leads to the conclusion that the oxidation path proceeds via a C-C bond cleavage. Increase in acidity and decrease in solvent polarity increased the rates. The formation constants (K) and unimolecular decomposition rate constants (K) for the complexes have been separated and discussed.
