Abstract:

Metal complexes of 4-hydroxy -3-amino coumarin (HAC) and 4-hydroxy-3-nttro coumarin (HNC) with trivalent chromium and divalent Manganese, Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper and Zinc have been synthesized. They are characterised on the basis of elemental analysis conductance measurements, TG, magnetic and spectral data. The composition of the complexes is represented as [ML2(H2O)2] On wherein if L=HAC, n=l for Cr(HI) and n=0 for other metal ions and L=HNC, ^^^^ n=3 for M=Cr{IH) and n=2 for other metal ions. HAC behaves as a monobasic bidentate, co-ordinating through the deprotonated phenolic oxygen and amino nitrogen of the chromone form. HNC acts as a neutral bidentate OO donor, wherein, besides the oxygen of NOa group, participa¬tion of the oxygen of lactone carbonyl is a notable feature. The ligands and their complexes have been screened against the fungi Rhizoctonia Solani and the bacteria Escherichia Coli. The studies show that metalation can increase the antifungal and anti-bacterial activity in case of Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes.
