Abstract:

As oxidimetric method for the determination of benzoyl hydrazine (BH) and salicyloyl hydrazine (SH) in orthophosphoric acid medium using vanadium (V) has been developed. Diphenylamine has been used as visual indicator for locating the end point. The use of osmium leiroxide as catalyst has become necessary. It is also necessary to warm the reaction mixture to about 40-50 C before it is titrated with vanadium (V) to a visual end point The end point has also been detected by a potentiometric method. The potential break at the equivalence point is 125-150 mv for 0.04 mi of 0.1 M vanadium (V) solution for both the hydrazics. The acidity range for the reaction is 4.0 to 9.5 M phosphoric acid for Hi I and 4.0 to 10.5 M for SI I, Four motes of oxidant are required for one mole each of SH and BH. The results are accurate to 0.40 % ± 0.15.
