Abstract:

The distributions of heavy metals in the Sedimentary layer of Kolar reservoir was studied for a period of one year (July 1994 to June 1995). Heavy metals such as Manganese, iron, Copper, Zinc and Lead were determined in sediment samples from reservoir by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry and UV-V1S Spectrophotometry. There was found no significant difference in the level of heavy metal concentration in the sediments at various selected sampling points. The reservoir is surrounded by rich forests but is relatively free from human activities. The presence of heavy metals in the sediments of reservoir is thus indicative of Geological features, of that nature, of the study area besides decay of vegetation in the forest area which ultimately goes in the reservoir and add to the sendimentary layer.
