Abstract

Separation and Determination of Metal Cations by Capillary Electrophoresis

M. C. Mehra1 and C. A. Lucy2

Abstract:

Separation of alkali, alkaline earths and some transition metals have been found feasible with new buffer systems composed of imidazole and simple aliphatic aminocarboxy lie acids employing an indirect UV detection mode. The preferred electrolyte 20 mM imidazole and 30 mM α-alanine at an adjusted pH 40, and 12 kV applied voltage is efficace for simultaneous analysis of K, Cu, Ca, Na, Mg, Cr, Li, and Cd in an aqueous system at 210 nm. The quantification limit in each case occurs at 5 x 105M concentration. The new buffer has been applied for the characterization of cationic species in potable water.
