Abstract

Monitoring of Heavy Metals in Sea Water Using an Algal Biosensor

L Campanella, F. Cubadda, M. P. Sammartino

Abstract:

The disopsal of pollutants into the marine environment takes place through fivers and water counts m which urban and industrial wastes are collected together with toxic substances extracted from the soil or tough air-transport. The evaluation of variations in the composition and quality of the sea environment can be assisted by the capacity displayed by numerous algal species to behave as biological indicators to the presence of pollutant particularly heavy metals, both through accumulation and through the toxic effects they suffer at high concentrations. Bioaccumutation data and a model of algal biosensor are described and discussed.
