Abstract

Spectrophotometric Study of Chemistry of Mercury (I) Dimer Using Thiosulfate, Dithionite and Disulfite Anions

Kambiz Khosravi

Abstract:

Man has always been fascinated about mecury due to its fluidity, color and weight. But little was known about the danger behind this magical metal until the Minamata accident in Japan. Ever since then, mercury has become the prime object of any environmental research chemist. I n this research, we have studied the reactions between mercury (I) and some anions of sulfur oxide. Our main attention was focused on the type, stoichoimetry adherence to Beer's law and calculations of molar absorptivity of the anions for each reaction. We have determined that the reactions are relatively slow and that they are of disproportionation and reduction type The range of theiradherence to Beer's law is from a few thousandth to a few tenth of a mg. of the anions. We have also proposed a working formula for each reaction
