Abstract

Study of Ionic Energies and Entropies of Activation for Viscous Flow of Magnesium Chloride in Aqueous Butanol Mixtures by Viscosity Method

Fahim Uddin*, Rehana Saeed and Khurram Munaf

Abstract:

Viscosities of magnesium chloride solutions in aqueous butanol mixtures (1 % to 5% v/v) were measured at various concentrations 0.47 x 10-2 to 4.2 x 10-2 (mol.dm-3) at different temperatures 30° to 45° respectively. Ion-ion and ion-solvent interactions were evaluated in terms of Jons Dole parameters 'A' and 'B' respectively. The decreased values of B-coefficients led to the conclusion that magnesium chloride solutions in aqueous butanol mixtures behave as structure maker. Thermodynamic studies were also carried out in order to study the nature of electrolyte in mixed solvent system. Linear regression method was employed for interpretation of viscosity data to determine A and B coefficients and activation parameters such as activation energy (E*η) change m free energy of activation (ΔG*) and change in entropy of activation (ΔS*) as a function of conosntsion of salt, percent composition of solvent and temperature.
