Abstract

Heavy Metal Content of Groundwater in Agra City

B. S. Chauhan and R. P. Singh

Abstract:

Analysis of heavy metals, viz. Iron, copper, cadmium, chromium, zinc, lead, manganese and nickel was carried out In groundwater samples drawn from various areas In Agra City during March 1996 and Feb. 1997 and results are presented In the paper. Fe content is found between 18,68-368,64 μg/l, Cu between 3.98-47.24 μg/l, chromium and cadmium Is well below prescribed limit. Lead concentration ranged between 0.52-22.46 μg/l while manganese ranged between 6.34*38.74 μg/l, it is revealed that quality of the investigated area has degraded over a few years with respect to heavy metal contamination. It Is concluded in the present study though heavy metal study in the groundwater olAgra city does not pose any immediate threat to the potability but if the present non-scientific disposal of solid wastes, sewage and Industrial effluents continues, the situation may get critical in near future. Keeping this synergistic Impact Of essential, non-essential and toxic metals in mind, people are advised not to consume raw groundwater.
