Abstract

Kinetic Study of the Gas Phase Hydrogenation of O-Xylene Over Pt/Al203 Catalyst

Riyadh A. Saymeh*1 and H. M. Asfour2

Abstract:

In this study the hydrogenation reaction was found to follow a non-competitive Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. This apparent activation energy was determined and found to be +52 kJ/ mol in the low temperature range (308-413 K) and of -42 kJ/mole at the high temperature range (413-473 K). The reaction rate was found to have a maximum at a temperature (Tmax) of 413K,The order with respect to o-xylene varied from 0.00-0.28 in the range 308-383K.The order with respect to hydrogen was constant at a value of 1.22 in the range 308-363 K, but a higher temperatures the order increased and reached to 2.52 at the temperature of 413K. The changes in order obtained in this study is in accordance with the predictions of the model which assumes the formation of an aromatic hydrogen deficient species.
