Abstract:

Performance of a pilot-scale deep primary facultative baffled pond fed with municipal sewage has been compared with an unbaffled similar pond. The study on grab effluent samples demonstrated that the baffled pond is more efficient in removal of volatile acids. Data from in-pond study showed that the baffled pond water-bulk behaved like that one of conventional primary facultative ponds showing a typical anaerobiosis/aerobiosis daily cycle particularly in the 50cm upper layer. Anaerobic conditions, neutral pH and higher volatile acid concentrations predominated throughout deeper water levels, whereas suspended solids, BOD5, and COD were less than those in the upper layer.
