Abstract

Kinetics and Mechanism of Oxidation of Aryl Amines by Sodium Metaperiodate: A Comparative Study of Uncatalysed Versus Ru(III)-Catalysed Reactions

D. K. Patra and Prafulla K. Misro

Abstract:

Kinetics of oxidation of 1 -napthylamine and 2-napthylamine by sodium metaperiodate in aqueous acetic acid-perchloric acid medium have been studied in the absence as well as in the presence of Ru(llI) as catalyst. In the absence of Ru(lll) the reaction sequence is a first order in [IO4 ][substrate] and independence of [H+] in the range studied. The reactions when studied in the presence of Ru(llI), show a zero order dependence on [IO4 ] first order in [substrate] and [Ru(llI)].The reaction is independent of [H+]. Both the reactions are found to be insensitive to the change in the ionic strength of the medium as well as dielectric constant of the medium. The activation parameters have been calculated. Based on the observed kinetic data, suitable rate laws and the possible mechanism have been envisaged both in the absence as well as presence of the catalyst.
