Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine physicochemical characteristics and levels of heavy metals in ponds and bore hole situated in a farm settelment in Nigeria. The following ranges were obtained.pH, 6.1-2.8, chloride 4.25-19.16ppm, Alkalinity, 102.00-180. 00pppm, D.O. 3.01-5.66, B.O.D.2.11-3.96 ppm, Sulphate, 12.67-30. 00ppm, Hardness,64.00-88. 00ppm as carbonate, conductivity 130.00-160 ms cm-1, Total solids 84.00-136. 00ppm. Fe(0.12-0.31 ppm) and Zn (1012-1.94 ppm). Mn, Pb, Cd and As were not detected in all the samples. These results show that the values are lower than prescribed by WHO except the value for iron at one location which is above the prescribed limit.
