Abstract:

Twenty one samples of different types of candies, manufactured by seven different companies were collected from the market and dye stuffs used in them were separated and identified by colour reaction, paper chromatography and spectrophotometrically. The colourant was estimated spectrophotometrically. It was found that nearly all the collected samples used permitted colours within the prescribed limits (0.2 g/kg). However, a survey conducted on the school going children indicates a very high intake of dye stuffs Ca25 mg/day against the worlds average of 15 mg/day especially by children belonging to low socio-economic group.
