Abstract

Synthesis of Urea - Acrylic Acid Resin

P. K. Srivastava and S. S. Majhi

Abstract:

Urea and acrylic acid have been co-polymerized by addition and condensation technique in presence and absence of Benzoyl peroxide Resin Is ooze solid having good tensile strength and adhesion. The resin is insoluble in common organic solvents where as, it is soluble in water in absence of Benzoyl peroxide. On increasing the benzoyl peroxide concentration solubility in water decreases and after a threshold concentration it became insoluble in water. Infrared analysis shows the presence of ether and amide linkage in the polymer. It appears that chain of polymer grows through ether linkage between oxygen of urea and vinyl group of acrylic acid. On the other hand condensation between amino group of urea and acidic group of acrylic acid makes branched and network structure. A tentative mechanism of polymerization is proposed.
