Abstract:

The synthesized complexes of the general formula ML2 ( M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, and Cd ; L = 3-[1-(2-pyridyl)ethylidene]hydrazinecarbodithioate ion) were found to have biological activity against cystease protein enzymes, falcipain-2 and falcipain-3 of the malarial parasite and also very high biological activity against the chloroquine resistant strain W-2. The cadmium complex, CdL2 was found to be about 170 times stronger as compared to the control drug with respect to W-2 and topped the list of the complexes tested. This prompted us to investigate the molecular structure of the complex by x-ray analysis. The complex has been found to have a crystalline triclinic symmetry of space group P-1. The complex adopts a distorted octahedral geometry with the L– acting as a tridentate ligand (NNS) binding to the metal through the pyridine nitrogen, the imine nitrogen and the thiolate sulphur atom.
