Abstract:

The cross-linked chloromethylated polystyrene reacts with Schiff base (LH3) (obtained from the condensation of 3-formylsalicylic acid and benzoylhydrazide) in DMF, in presence of ethyl acetate and triethylamine and forms polystyrene-anchored Schiff base (PSCH2-LH2) I. I reacts with a of metal ions to form magnetically dilute polystyrene-anchored coordination compounds such as [PSCH2 - LM DMF] [where M = Cu (II), Zn (II), Cd (II), MoO2 (VI)], [PSCH2 - LM'.3 DMF] [where, M' = Ni (II), Co (II), Mn (II], [PSCH2 - LFeCl.2DMF] and [PSCH2 - LZr(OH2)2DMF]. These compounds have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, spectral (infrared, reflectance and electron spin resonance) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. I behaves as dibasic tridentate (ONO donor) ligand in the above compounds. [PSCH2 - LM.DMF] [where, M = Zn (II), Cd (II), MoO2 (VI), UO2(VI)] and [PSCH2 - LZr(OH2).2DMF] are diamagnetic, while others are paramagnetic. [PSCH2-LCu.DMF] is square planar : [PSCH2 - LM.DMF] [where M = Zn (II), Cd (II)] is tetrahedral; [PSCH2-LMoO2.DMF], [PSCH2-LUO2.DMF], [PSCH2 - LM’.3DMF] [where M’ = Ni (II), Co(II), Mn(II), [PSCH2-LFeCl.2DMF] are octahedral and [PSCH2 - LZr (OH2).2DMF] is pentagonal bipyramidal.
