Abstract:

Serum electrolytes play a key role in the clinical practice. However literature survey has revealed that there are no studies on the influence of serum electrolytes levels in diabetic and non-diabetic Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients. Therefore, the investigation has aimed to compare the serum electrolytes profile in diabetic and non-diabetic CKD patients.100 non-diabetics with proven evidence of CKD (78 males, 22 females) and 100 diabetic CKD patients (72 males, 28 females) were enrolled in the study. The serum samples were collected and the electrolytes profile including serum sodium, potassium, bicarbonate and chloride were estimated and reported. Serum sodium and potassium levels are significantly decreased in diabetic CKD patients and bicarbonate levels are increased in the same group. Serum electrolytes estimation is vital in diabetic CKD patients in the regular practice.
