Abstract

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of Mannich Bases of Indolizine Analogues

Amit Kumar Das* and Ishita Mukherjee

Abstract:

Some Mannich bases of indolizine-1-carboxylate 2a-h were synthesized by reacting indolizine-1-carboxylate with formaldehyde and various secondary amines. The structures of these compounds were established by the spectral data and they were tested for antimicrobial activity against Gram +ve bacteria, i.e. S. aureus, B. subtilis and Gram -ve bacteria, i.e. E. coli and P. aeruginosa and antifungal activity against C. albicans. Ciprofloxacin was used as standard for antibacterial activity and clotrimazole for antifungal activity. Compounds, 2b, 2e and 2f have shown maximum activity (75% to 86.8%) against both Gram –ve bacteria, i.e., E. coli and P. aeruginosa and compounds, 2c, 2f and 2g have shown maximum activity (77.5% to 95.1%) against gram +ve bacteria, i.e., B. subtilis and S. aureus compared to standard drugs. None of these compounds has shown significant antifungal activity.
