K. V. F. Fatokun

Abstract:

This paper is a report of recycling of lead-based slag from battery waste, which is known to be very hazardous to man and its environment was used to manufacture bricks. Blast furnace slag from factory waste of Exide Battery Nigeria Limited, Ibadan, containing heavy metals with the following concentration values: Pb=266028ppm, Fe=55871ppm, Sb=7962ppm, Cu=500ppm, Mn=292ppm and Zn=151ppm was recycled to manufacture bricks. The slag was finely ground and mixed with clay in varying proportions. The mix was cast under pressure, dried and fired at temperature above 8000C for 8 hours. The finished bricks showed good facial appearance at 40-60% slag composition and have relatively high strength when used as facings.
