Abstract:

Interest in azetidinones as a class acquired importance since the discovery of penicillin which contains b-lactam ring as an essential structural feature and this interest continues unabated because of the therapeutic importance of b-lactam antibiotics and recernt finding of new naturally occurring b-lactams. As a result of vigorous research, a vast literature has been accumulated over the years, and the chemistry of azetidinones continues to be blossoming field. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the development of stereo and enatioselective methodologies. The utility of azetidinones as synthons for various biologically active compounds, as well as their recognition as cholesterol absorption inhibitors and enzyme inhibitors has given impetus to these studies. This review article aims to review the work reported on the chemistry and biological activities of 2-azetidinones during past years.
