Abstract

Application of Ion Exchange Resin for Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Aqueous Solutions

Satish N. Vaishnav and V. S. Shrivastava

Abstract:

This study evaluated, the chromium removal performance of strongly basic anion exchange resin Amberlite IR 400. The removal process was studied at various pH of the solution, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration and amberlite doses by employing batch experiments. The effect of foreign anion like SO42-, Cl-, CH3COO-, NO3-, CO32- and PO43- has also been studied. Beside the above, the column study was conducted by down flow technique. It has been observed that Amberlite works well in pH range 2-10 for Cr(VI) removal. Increase in initial Cr(VI) concentration the percent removal decreases, but amount of Cr(VI) absorbed per unit weight of Amberlite increases. With increase in amberlite dose the percent removal also increases. The foreign anion do not seriously affect the removal efficiency of amberlite except CO32- and PO43-. The maximum absorptions capacity 0.2 g/g was observed in column study.
