Abstract:

Present paper describes the synthesis and characterisation of metal complexes of Diazepam. The complexes of Fe(lll) and Cr(lll) have been prepared by mixing the ligand with corresponding metal nitrates in presence of ethanol. Both the complexes have been characterised by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analyis and IR spectral data. The molecular formula of the complexes corresponds to [M(L-H) (NO3)2], where, Me = FeIII and CrIII and L = Diazepam. The metal complexes are colouredstable towards air and moisture. The analytical data show that the stoichiometry of the complexes is 1:1 (Metal to ligand). On the basis of physico-chemical and IR spectral studies, it has been observed that the ligand coordinates to the metal ion in a bidentate fashion through the N(1) and N(4) nitrogen atoms. The remaining coordinated centers are satisfied by NO3- ions. Thermogravimetric studies show that the decomposition of complexes take place in two stages and water molecules are absent in Fe(lll) and Cr(lll) complexes. The Antimicrobial studies of ligand and its metal complexes have been screened for selected bacteria (E. coli, S. typhi, B. subtilis and S. aureus) and Fungi (A. flavous, A. niger, P. triticena and F. species). Antimicrobial studies suggest that the Fe(lll) complex is more toxic in case of bacteria but for fungi Cr(lll) complex is more toxic.
