Jaywant Govind Hatim and Vidya Joshi*

Abstract:

Substituted methyl anthranilates 5a-e prepared from substituted anilines 1a-e by a four steps synthesis on condensation with 3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamoyl chloride 6 in presence of triethylamine (Et)3N and ethylene dichloride (EDC) gave substitated N-3,4,5-trimethoxycinnmoylanthranilates 7a-e and their hydrolysis products, N-3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamoylanthranilic acids 8a-e. Both have been found to have variable plant growth promoting (cytokinin) activity against seeds of Raphanus sativum family Brassicaceae (common name white radish variety pusa chetki) using benzyladenine as standard. Compound 8d is found to have higher growth promoting activity than benzyladenine. Compounds 7b,c,d and 8b,c,e show inhibiting activity.
