Abstract

Monitoring the Chemical Pollutants in Some River Flowing Through Cocoa Plantation Areas

P. A. Oyewusi and B. F. Adeosun

Abstract:

Fifteen water sample with their respective sediments collected from ten rivers flowing through cocoa plantation in South-Western Nigeria have been analysed for heavy metals and physico-chemical parameters. The results gave the range (N.D - 18.25) mg/L and (0.15 - 650.02) mg/L for water sample and sediments respectively as heavy metals concentration level. The water sample also gave the range (32.50 - 116.00), for total alkalinity, (11.00 - 306.00), for total dissolved solid, (45.00 - 104.00), for total hardness. (20.00 - 56.00) for calcium hardness, (36.00 - 70.00), for magnesium hardness, (4.70 - 57.00) for chloride (0.52 - 1.20) for phosphate, (45.20 - 148.25) for sulphate, (2.50-31.35) for nitrate and (14.05 - 98.37) for COD in milligram per liter of sample. Some of the trace metals detected is above the acceptable limit of the W. H. O standard.
