Abstract:

Various paper making characteristics of cellulose such as folding endurance, bonding, heat resistance bursting strength, tearing strength could be modified through acetylation upgradation techniques. Literature review indicates scarcity of data on chemical upgradation techniques. Chemical modification of bagasse, bamboo and pad pulp through acetylation was performed with acetic anhydride using dimethyl formamide and cuperethylenediaamine solution as a solvent and the changes in characteristics were presented. The upgradation was best with bagasse pulp and it was observed to exhibit best paper characteristics followed by bamboo and pad pulp acetylation of pulp was found to bring remarkable enhancement in considerable reduction of hydroxyl value for all type of samples have been investigted.
